From my "Blues" series, this was done in La Jolla, CA. The title takes it's name from a Langston Hughes poem and the musical composition of John Coltrane who would play this song as a tribute to Hughes work. As with the measures on a scale the work is done in multiples of five. Bricks, banisters, bars all fives.
My philosophy is simple: Composition, Story, Elegant Line. "If you find the elegant line, your work will be lyrical." I produce works in pencil, acrylic, watercolor, found objects, and digital photography. I completed a Painting Intensive at the San Francisco Art Institute, studying with world renown Israeli artist Larry Abramson and at at the Ox-Bow School of the Art Institute Chicago under Phil Hanson and Michelle Grabner. I earned my BFA from Drake University in Des Moines, IA. My studies included an emphasis in painting and printmaking. My work is hanging in private collections throughout the United States and Europe. In 2009 I received the Tony Award, a traveling art award honoring individual artists on Fine Art...

I agree with Roger's comment, and Min's words really summed it up: angles & harmony--true enough. vf

Wonderful work, Kevin! Love the colors in this painting, especially the blue!

I think I like this best of all.. it has a wonderful lilting sense of the music being played.

You make the arch work. And make the viewer, me anyway, a little on edge! Listen, it's interesting to me how many women you paint versus how few man and HOW you paint men! The men have "soul", depth and do things like play instruments. The women, in my quick analysis which could be totally wrong, are ornamental and beautiful, fun or drowsy. I'm sorta playing around, here. Please don't get serious. But it's also kind true? Hey??? Looking forward to your response on this.
Joyce Owens
Yeah, I agree with Iris. The composition sets this one. Miro-esque? Calder influenced stabile? Very sculptural at any rate. Risky having that arch come out of the musician's head.

Love this one, interesting composition and color, compelling subject!
