Artist's Description
While conducting an artist in residence program at a middle school I was explaining how I photographed subjects for my paintings. As I was explaining I was also shooting. As a surprise I completed this work at home while working on another in the classroom.
About Kevin Callahan
My philosophy is simple: Composition, Story, Elegant Line. "If you find the elegant line, your work will be lyrical." I produce works in pencil, acrylic, watercolor, found objects, and digital photography. I completed a Painting Intensive at the San Francisco Art Institute, studying with world renown Israeli artist Larry Abramson and at at the Ox-Bow School of the Art Institute Chicago under Phil Hanson and Michelle Grabner. I earned my BFA from Drake University in Des Moines, IA. My studies included an emphasis in painting and printmaking. My work is hanging in private collections throughout the United States and Europe. In 2009 I received the Tony Award, a traveling art award honoring individual artists on Fine Art...

I agree with the artist who says this is one of the best he's ever seen. Her interesting and almost challenging facial expressions and the way you've captured the shininess of the table and intricacy of her expression, plus how her cheek is even puffed out a little resting on her hand, is masterful. v/f

This is one of my favorites. She's a classic teen looking back at an adult.

Kevin. love the stripes and reflections, the pose, the eyes, the elegant line, I guess I just really like this one, but if I had only said that, this would have been so much shorter, and this piece deserves a longer comment, so I felt the need to elaborate, by the way the background color is perfect, and quite frankly, I believe this is one of Your best

it may just be me but this seems to be a breakthrough painting - it fully captivates me. Your trademark (?) neo-classical background pushing us to the modern 2d integrity of surface and still getting a life like expression from your subjects has just made a quantum jump to me. The gorgeous reflective foreground surface just pushes the game up a notch & makes the face radiate even more with soft depth and lucid expression.

This may be my new favorite.... So fabric headbands are back? And you just had to pick the one with all those stripes on her shirt. Glutton for punishment!
