Artist's Description
This is the third work of mine that references another famous work. This painting takes its inspiration from Andrew Wyeth's Christina's World the 1948 painting of a polio-stricken woman whose world was confined to her New England farmstead. I observed my wife in similar pose in northern California as she sat in a field of wild flowers gazing over the Pacific. In Karen's World rather than a limited world, Karen has the entire world in front of her. This is a reflection of her life of travel.
The background has two references: the ocean infers Rothko's color field paintings while the dry field of wild flowers uses the gestural marks of Cy Twombly to indicate mass and volume.
At six foot by three foot this is a large work.
