Artist's Description

This unusual derringer was the brainchild of Remington inventor William H. Elliot, this diminutive Remington featured a hammer that also served as a breech block. Also known as the "Saw Handle Derringer," these small personal defense arms were available with blued, silver, or nickeled finish. Approximately 20,000 of these single shot pistols were produced between 1865 and 1888.

The guns could be "dressed" with ivory or pearl handles and factory engraving. This one is in the popular .41 rimfire but they were also produced in .22, .30, & .32 rim as well. Some records show as many as 25,000 models in .22 were produced with another 15,000 in the other three calibers. There were, maybe 5-7,000 produced in .41 rim. While the Saw Handle model is not rare it is scarce.

These little guns are not quite in the curio category but are fun to hold and imagine. Imagine is what one must do as very little other than the basics have been written about the Remington Elliot Saw Handle....
